Introduction

Performance is more than memorizing lines or dancing to music. It is about presence, storytelling, discipline, and emotional connection. Whether on stage, in film, in faith-based drama, or in civic spaces, performance is powerfully tied to voice, identity, and influence.

This course is designed for individuals passionate about expressing themselves through movement, speech, and embodied storytelling. You will learn the fundamentals of acting, speech, movement, ensemble work, and performance coaching, with deep attention to the Nigerian stage, African forms, and the psychology of the performer.

Course Overview

This is a hands-on course that combines performance technique with personal growth and cultural insight. It integrates:

  • Stage acting and character building
  • Movement and physical theatre
  • Spoken word and dramatic monologue
  • Faith-based, civic, and traditional performance forms
  • Introduction to directing and performance critique

Throughout, students will work on live scenes, personal pieces, and ensemble performances. The course also prepares learners to coach, direct, and produce performances for schools, faith spaces, nonprofits, and corporate events.

Course Description

You will train to use your body, voice, and mind as instruments of expression and leadership. The course will cover:

  • Scene study and how to break down a script or narrative
  • Voice work including breath, projection, tone, and enunciation
  • Improvisation techniques to build creative confidence
  • Physicality and movement styles across cultural and contemporary forms
  • African performance traditions including drumming, chants, and folklore dramatization
  • Emotional authenticity and commanding stage presence
  • Directing for stage including blocking and ensemble coordination
  • Storytelling for impact through skits, spoken word, and issue-based drama

Module 1: The Performer’s Instrument

Module 3: Movement and Ensemble Practice

Module 4: Spoken Word and Monologue Performance

  • Writing and performing with rhythm, clarity, and personal truth
  • Spoken word structure, pacing, and audience presence
  • Exploring regional forms of oral performance

Module 5: Nigerian Performance Culture

  • Exploring folklore, chants, call and response, and communal theatre
  • Faith-based and civic drama formats
  • Performance as a tool for education and public awareness

Module 6: Directing and Producing Small-Scale Performances

  • Working with performers and shaping scenes
  • Coordinating rehearsals and stage readiness
  • Leading creative projects from concept to final performance

Module 7: Final Showcase and Performance Reflection

  • A live ensemble or solo performance
  • Reflection and feedback from instructors and invited guests
  • Final certificate presentation and peer recognition

Instructors

Facilitated by directors, performers, and creative educators with a track record in Nigerian theatre, TV, stage coaching, and cultural storytelling. Instructors bring firsthand experience in stage production, actor training, and drama coaching for schools, ministries, and advocacy campaigns.

Guest sessions feature choreographers, actors, spoken word performers, and movement coaches.
